Why is November 14th celebrated as Children’s Day?
The celebrated date of Children’s Day varies from country to country. For instance, in Pakistan it is celebrated on the 1st July, whereas, in the United Kingdom and Spain, it is observed on the second Sunday of May (i.e. 10th May 2020). But initially it was November 20th for all the countries.
November 14th is the date marked with the festivity of this day in India. It holds an immense importance for all Indians, as it’s the birthday of Jawaharlal Nehru, who was the first president of India after partition.
At first, like other countries, Children’s Day was celebrated on 20th November but after the loss, that India faced in 1964, the date gradually shifted to November 14th. Jawaharlal Nehru died this year, which was extremely shocking for everyone. He was fond of children and had put forward children welfare and education in the country. It was his utter belief that the country’s growth depends on its youth and children are the future of the nation.
To honour his believes, it was announced that the Children’s Day would be celebrated on his birthday i.e November 14th.
